Four Things You Need To Do In Victoria Falls

As one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, I’m pretty sure Vic Falls is a location that appears on plenty of bucket lists. Even though it’s been a few months since I witnessed the epic-ness of The Falls in person, I still can’t quite believe that I have crossed this destination off my own list! Earlier this year, Luke and I travelled to Victoria Falls with Legacy Hotels to do some videography work at The Kingdom as well as Elephant Hills Resort. While we were there, we were lucky enough to experience some of the amazing activities that Africa’s adventure capital has to offer. If you ever get a chance to visit the world’s largest curtain of falling water, here are four activities that you can’t miss!

1. Visit the Victoria Falls Bridge

This famous railway bridge lies in no man’s land between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Stretching over a gorge that overlooks the magical waterfall, this historical bridge connects the two countries that The Falls divide. A bunch of activities are on offer here courtesy of Shearwater, ranging from a historical bridge walk to bungee jumping. Although it may seem tame, the bridge walk is awesome as it makes for amazing views of The Falls, the ‘boiling pot’ of water below and the ever-present circular rainbows. Unfortunately at the time I was waaay too chicken to do the bungee jump or the terrifying bridge swing, so I settled on the bridge slide. Zooming along the 300m zipline was definitely something I could have done again and again… actually as soon as I landed safely on the other side, the bungee seemed enticing rather than daunting. Ah well, I guess we’ll just have to go back!

2. Walk through the rainforest

Although this might seem boring compared to the other adrenaline-packed adventures on offer, this walk was unforgettable for me. Whether you decide to explore on your own or go on a guided tour, you just have to go. Running almost parallel to the magnificent waterfall, the lush rainforest provides the ideal platform from which to truly experience this wonder of nature… a complete sensory overload awaits you. Here you can hear the booming thunder of the falling water, feel the spray of The Falls on your skin, taste the water in the air, smell the moisture and, of course, see this gigantic waterfall from up close. Remember to bring a raincoat as it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll get wet!

3. Fly over the falls in a helicopter

Of course, one of the highlights of our trip was the helicopter flight over The Falls. Nothing can prepare you for the sight of Victoria Falls from above… the scale doesn’t actually register until you see it from this angle, which is exactly what made the helicopter trip so incredible. Soaring over the enormous sheet of water allowed me to understand why Victoria Falls is a wonder of nature. The experience is truly magical. Be warned though, the fee for only a couple of minutes in the air is rather steep, but there’s no way you’ll regret it. If you have the means, go for it – this is one of my top travel moments ever ever ever.

Because I was the GoPro bearer I got the front seat… not a bad view.

4. Cruise along the Zambezi

After plenty of adrenaline and adventure, what could be more idyllic than an evening cruise on the Zambezi? Not much in my opinion. Snacks, drinks, wildlife spotting and a pink-red sunset made this chilled out cruise an activity highlight. We were lucky enough to spot three gigantic hippos wallowing in the water… we watched them munch and bob up and down for about 20 minutes hands down my top hippo sighting ever. Cruising between two countries is also pretty damn cool… it’s amazing how different Zambia and Zimbabwe look from the river.

As a whole, I couldn’t recommend Vic Falls more. Packed with adventure, excitement, unbelievable beauty and friendly people, this famous spot certainly lived up to its reputation.
